Ladies and Gentlemen:
In the constant changing conditions VET won the final scramble to achieve his 8th pole of the season with HAM producing another of his last second heroics to get himself in the front row. But behind WEB in 3rd we have the most unusual starting grid with ALO in 8th, BUT in 13th and two unfamiliar names in the top 10: Alguersuari 6th in the Toro Rosso and Senna 7th in the Renault. SCH starts last (a good recipe for action and shattered carbon fibre on track)
We did pretty badly again (let’s blame the weather too), only Fernando and leader Uwe reached 2 points, most of the rest (10) had to settle for 1.
This how they will start:
VET HAM WEB MAS ROS ALG SEN ALO PER PET
Weather predictions for Sunday are for a cloudy, dry day with only a slight possibility of light showers towards the end of the race. Temperatures in the low 15-16 deg C, precisely the range where the Red Bull suffers with its tires.
With the mixed up grid we are going to see plenty of overtaking, the single DRS activation zone is set for the Kennel straight, the stretch from Eau Rouge to Les Combes. The expected dry-weather strategy will be a 3 stopper for the 44 laps, with stints of 12-14 laps for the option tires and one last very short stint with the primes. Pit stops are comparatively less taxing in the shorter Spa’s pitlane, about 18 seconds, and this could be Red Bull advantage, their mechanics regularly beating the competition by .5 to 1 second (just ask MAS what happened last race...) So far Red Bull’s only known weakness is their higher tire degradation in low track temperatures; Ferrari and McLaren will be looking at the sky hoping the sun will not shine and capitalize in longer stints for their drivers.
In the last 17 Spa Grand Prix the polesitter has won only 3 times; since 1999 only Ferrari and McLaren had monopolized every victory here. From the active drivers only HAM, MAS (once) and SCH (6 times) had won in Spa.
Ready? Sure? This one looks as tough as it gets –
