Ladies and Gentlemen,
F1 is not that predictable after all. We were treated to a dramatic, thrilling Hungarian GP today. Both Ferraris had a lightning start to beat Mercedes for a second victory this season, and they were heading for a one-two if not for bad luck to strike RAI once again. It was undoubtedly the best race we’ve seen in a long-long time, action packed from beginning to end. Red Bull took advantage of the late chaos to capture the remaining 2 steps of the podium thanks to RIC inspired and aggressive driving (he punctured tyres on BOT and ROS cars on his way to 3rd). HAM had a track disagreement with ROS and was out of contention from lap 1 but worked his way back to 6th. Safety Car showed up towards the end to completely changing the race, erasing VET’s Ferrari advantage and giving ROS one last opportunity and also closing up the rest of the field. Always smart and opportunistic ALO rewarded McLaren with a surprising 5th behind rookie VER’s Toro Rosso. Make that no Mercedes and 3 Renault-powered cars in the top 5. It was VET’s first win in Hungary, the 41st of his career moving him level with the great Ayrton Senna in the all time list.
Jules Bianchi’s memory was celebrated by all drivers before the race and then by VET dedicating his win to him in front of Jules’ closest family members, as did RIC also. This was the first time this generation of drivers has to deal with the death of one of his colleagues.
As a result of all this thrills and spills we made history at the CFA with probably our worst marks ever (I have to confirm that with our historian expert Santiago). Collectively we score a grand total of two 3-pointers (!), win Hector taking his second consecutive victory with a record low 6 points, one ahead of Erik, the only 2 members with RIC in 3rd place for gold
prizes. The rest of us had to do with 3 points except Danny and Rodrigo with 4 points.
Our dismal results of course are adding even more drama to the Championship Standings. Maria Elisa holds on to the lead in front of all the boys but Fredrik is now keeping her company in 114 points; rookie Danny sits temporarily alone in second with 113 one point ahead of former Champs Fernando, Rocco/Joe Jr and the ever present Manbos. Doing the math that’s 6 associates within 2 points after 10 races, oh my. Following long 4 points behind is the charging Hector and I with 108. Lou dropped places (107) and closing the top 10 are the upcoming Erik & Santiago with 106. The next four positions are separated by 4 points... The relegation battle carries on between Uwe 88, Lorenzo 90 and Alberto 91. The point spread between top and bottom continues at 25 points, it’s being without change now for several races.
Our enthusiasm will be put on hold for another 3-week summer break until the Belgian GP at glorious SPA 24-26 July. It’s going to feel like an eternity!
At least we will keep the good taste in our mouths after this great race. F1 is not boring as some say…
Until then
Cheers
Cato
