Korean GP 2013 - QF

by Cato Batista, 05/10/2013 3:12:52

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Red Bull´s superiority from Singapore is clearly not as overwhelming in Yeongam, something to do with the difficulty of finding the right amount of downforce that is needed for the 3 very different sectors of the track. Sector one is very fast with long straights, sector two resembles the more conventional flowing fast corners of traditional circuits, and sector 3 comprises lots of tight turns between walls resembling a street circuit. As a result Mercedes is fastest in the first sector, Lotus in the second and Red Bull in the third.

The tyre situation looks like this: The option super-soft is about 1 sec faster than the prime medium compound for QF trim; both tyres showed good durability and low degradation rates (advantage Mercedes). On long run performance there is very little between the two which points to a possible 2-stops for race day.

To summarize: Mercedes has the edge in single lap speed, Lotus with its new long wheel base chassis has the best tyre management and average lap times on long runs, and Red Bull is right behind in both departments. Ferrari? they are out of the picture at the moment, although their long-run sequences suggest they can be in contention comes race day. Right now they don’t have the car to qualify near the front.

FP results:

P1 -HAM (1.39.630) VET WEB ROS BUT ALO GRO RAI PER MAS

P2- HAM (1.38.673) VET ROS WEB MAS GRO ALO RAI BUT SUT

Raikkonen registered the only accident of consideration at the end of P1, his car was repaired just in time for P2. The Finn still complains of back pain and he ...

Korean GP 2013 - Preview

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It’s time to get in ‘Grand Prix state of mind’, we have the fourteenth round of the Championship coming up in Korea this weekend.

After VET and Red Bull demolished the field in Singapore two weeks ago the message became loud and clear: get ready for 2014. ALO is 60 points behind VET and if both the driver and the team have a reputation for never giving up the chances are so remote that the team has decided to use Fridays’ sessions to test aero components for next year’s car. Even Red Bull feels so confident that they are switching 70% of their efforts back at the factory to the new regulation’s car.

The Yeongam circuit has become the least favorite among the F1 Circus; it’s layout somewhat sterile and the place has a total lack of atmosphere –too far from everywhere and the grandstands are mostly empty. On top of that VET has won every edition except the first when he retired from the lead. The most exciting news for the weekend are ...

Singapore GP 2013 - Race

by Cato Batista, 22/09/2013 1:19:54

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As the script had it, VET grabbed pole pretty much uncontested.  After outpacing the pack by nearly a second in Q2 he opted to do just one Q3 run that nobody could match even as the track went faster towards the end.  GRO got very close on his last flyer and then ROS, but in the end his overconfidence paid dividends as he was able to save a set of options for tomorrow.
