Canadian GP 2012 - Preview

by Cato Batista, 07/06/2012 21:39:18

Ladies and Gentlemen:

We are going to Montreal for the 7th round and we have plenty of reasons to be very excited about this race.
After last year’s torrential rain that made this GP the longest in history (4 hours plus) we don’t want another wet GP this Sunday. The Gilles Villeneuve circuit doesn’t need the extra spice to produce a fabulous race every single time, but with 6 different winners so far this edition promises to be a thriller.
What’s more, the FIA thinks that the track doesn’t need double DRS zones and only one will be implemented this time (from corner 10 in the long back straight). With 60% of the time at full throttle and several sections of track where cars reach 300kph leading into heavy braking areas, overtaking is not really a problem here.
So much blame has fell on the tyres for this year’s unpredictable results that I’m sure you are going to like this next surprise we have for you.
This new link in our website, the most recent creation of indefatigable Manbos and eternal accomplice Santiago, is a chart that graphically identifies tyre compounds and their colours plus all the rules to help you understand for example why drivers have to save new rubber for the race in detriment to their starting position. It is all at your fingertips, go here:

As you may already know, eight lucky CFA associates will be in attendance this weekend in Montreal arriving from 5 different cities. We all had been checking the forecast in a daily basis impatiently and to this day nobody is completely ...

Monaco GP 2012 - Results - Uwe again

by Cato Batista, 27/05/2012 20:19:02

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This is officially the best F1 season on record: six different winners in 6 races, and it’s only getting better and better. Red Bull got its third successive victory in Monaco with Webber corroborating there’s no other place but pole to win this race. The caliber of the driving was superb; these amazing guys do not make mistakes even under the most intense and insane bumper to bumper racing.

On our side we registered the first repeat winner this season, Uwe, and now he is seriously running away with the Championship. He was very comfortable in the lead most of last year only to choke in the final stages, but this time around he is sailing into the distance while the rest of us except Maria are consistently struggling.
Uwe has won this race with a season-high 13 points, Fernando was second with 12 points, they both scored 4 gold scores, only the second time we reach that number after Uwe’s performance in Australia. The closest we got to them was two 3-pointers by Rocco, Ricardo & I (9p) and Maria & Manbos (8p). The rest continued with the 2012 pattern of scoring below the low all time average of 6 points. It’s brutal.

Making the smart choice of betting on the poleman 8 members predicted the win by Webber; the season is so competitive that we registered seven different drivers as possible winners! We scored 8 hits as well with Alonso in third, and after that our best paying ...

Monaco GP 2012 - Race

by Cato Batista, 26/05/2012 20:10:50

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The unexpected is the norm these days, so don’t be surprised to find Schumacher fastest in Q3. Schummi will hand the pole to second place Webber to serve a 5 grid penalty for ramming Senna last race. Both Mercedes were flying, Rosberg beating pre-race favourite Hamilton for 3rd. Vettel knew his Red Bull didn’t have the speed to challenge for pole and instead sat out Q3 to save red-tyres. Button was perplexed for answers for his lack of pace, he couldn’t make it past Q2. Maldonado was penalized with 10 grid positions for purposely hitting Perez on free practice 3.

The final grid formation for tomorrow’s race:

WEB ROS HAM GRO ALO SCH MAS RAI VET HUL

Guess what? Our total collective QF points tally for Monaco was zero. ZERO points! our absolute worst qualifying record ever. What a season this has been, the best qualifying marks we have to show for after 6 races is a lowly 5 points by 7 members (Uwe, Joe, Fredrik, Santiago, Lou, Rocco & Fernando) an accurate reflection of the complexity of this season.

The mistery of this year’s unpredictability lies on the tyres, of course. Many influential voices are raising criticism at supplier Pirelli (Schumacher in particular), but the tyre manufacturer argues that the narrow operating window is similar to last season’s (when nobody complained) except this year that narrow range is located at higher temperatures and seems to be very ...

Monaco GP 2012

by Cato Batista, 25/05/2012 20:33:59

Ladies and Gentlemen,

A completely green track and then the rain made for very little running on Thursday, the opening practice day. Most of P1 was sat out by the bit teams to save tires on the green circuit, Alonso and Grosjean traded the top spot on the timesheets with Perez next. The Ferrari driver was working the wheel noticeable more than the Lotus’, but at least both red F2012s looked very drivable around the narrow streets and Massa was closer than usual to his teammate.
On P2 there was a rush by all the teams to set a time in the dry before the expected showers came 15 minutes into the session. Button, the only one on super-softs did a flyer 4 tenths faster than the ever present Grosjean and 8 tenths faster than the Ferraris. Pirelli recons the super-soft should be 3 tenths faster than the prime-soft around here, which gives Button’s time an indication of McLaren’s potential this weekend.
There’s no other GP where qualifying is more critical than Monaco. Seven of the last 8 victories came from the pole, and since 1986 all the winners with one exception started on the top 3 positions on the grid. That pushes the teams to dedicate a large part of their preparations for single lap, low fuel QF trim, even these days where races are won or lost understanding the narrow operating window of the Pirellis.
It’s difficult to measure Red Bull’s form at this stage, their customary approach to QF is not showing their cards until the last moment, but both their drivers are Monte Carlo specialists and you can expect them to be next to Lotus very close to McLaren. Ferrari ...
