Two issues emerged as top priority for the teams after the first round of practice sessions today: the soft tires are a lot faster than the medium, and with the double DRS zones for Sunday a difficult decision has to be made: either set up the car for QF or for the race...
With warmer temperatures for the weekend the difference in laptimes between the 2 compounds seems to be increasing, that’s making the teams to be very careful with the number of soft sets they use. Best example was ROS who was 22nd but save all his option tire sets for Saturday and Sunday. But the biggest challenge will be to set up minimum wing on the car to take full advantage of DRS-open qualifying rules or to optimize it for race day when DRS is only allowed in 2 designated zones. This could well result in the top cars on the grid being easy to get pass during the race...
McLaren was the car to have on Friday, only Vettel got on top on the last moment of P2 when Hamilton run into traffic in his last lap. Laptimes where slower on the second session, something we rarely see.
Times from P2 could be more noteworthy than the earlier session when teams were doing short runs for settings evaluation and systems check. Most of the important testing including long runs and tire set up were done on P2 . (surprised to find Schummi 3rd?)
The question is: Mercedes-power vs. Red Bull aero balance – Hamilton vs Vettel...This could be the best and last chance this year to stop ...
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Red Bull and VET repeated the dose for the 8th time, and after this one the discussion about the 2011 Championship is probably over. The sister RB7 imposed its pace to bring WEB in 2nd for their second 1-2 of the season - so much for their pre-race tire blistering concerns. BUT was brilliant again coming from 13th to 3rd; ALO was feisty in the early going but ended up where the Ferrari belongs (4th) and the Mercedes had their best outing yet in 5th & 6th.
Rodrigo was the clear winner in Spa with 4 driver/positions and 12 points, 2 a of Curro, Ian and superlider Uwe, these three scoring triple 3-pointers in a race of mixed results for the group. With the exception of Fredrik (5) nobody had more than 4 drivers in the top 6 and in 4 instances some colleagues didn’t even score a single correct position!
Our best result by far was with ALO in 4th place with 11 votes; we didn’t do too bad predicting the winner either with 8 of you (Alberto, Curro, Manbos, Ian, Matias, winner Rodrigo, Sebastian and Tim) picking VET. Next was WEB’s second with 6, then ROS’s sixth with 5 votes, but none of us got anything out of the third (BUT) or fifth (SCH) positions.

In the race for the Championship I have bad news for 20 of 21 members: Uwe (114) now has a very worrisome 8 point lead, just when the closer marks at the top were giving hope to the chasing pack. Alone in second is Rocco (106) and then, amazingly there are 5 comrades tied in third place with 105 points – Manbos, Tim, Joe, Curro and ...

Ladies and Gentlemen:
In the constant changing conditions VET won the final scramble to achieve his 8th pole of the season with HAM producing another of his last second heroics to get himself in the front row. But behind WEB in 3rd we have the most unusual starting grid with ALO in 8th, BUT in 13th and two unfamiliar names in the top 10: Alguersuari 6th in the Toro Rosso and Senna 7th in the Renault. SCH starts last (a good recipe for action and shattered carbon fibre on track)
We did pretty badly again (let’s blame the weather too), only Fernando and leader Uwe reached 2 points, most of the rest (10) had to settle for 1.
This how they will start:
VET HAM WEB MAS ROS ALG SEN ALO PER PET
Weather predictions for Sunday are for a cloudy, dry day with only a slight possibility of light showers towards the end of the race. Temperatures in the low 15-16 deg C, precisely the range where the Red Bull suffers with its tires.
With the mixed up grid we are going to see plenty of overtaking, the single DRS activation zone is set for the Kennel straight, the stretch from Eau Rouge to Les Combes. The expected dry-weather strategy will be a 3 stopper for the 44 laps, with stints of 12-14 laps for the option tires and one last very short stint with the primes. Pit stops are comparatively less taxing in the shorter Spa’s pitlane, about 18 seconds, and this could be Red Bull advantage, their mechanics regularly beating the competition by .5 to 1 second (just ask MAS what happened last race...) So far Red Bull’s only known weakness is their higher tire degradation in low ...
