Singapore GP 2012 - Race

by Cato Batista, 22/09/2012 22:09:01

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Fourth pole in a row for McLaren. Hamilton was quickest when it matter the most, at the end of Q3. Vettel was third after dominating every single session behind Maldonado who pulled off another of his surprises to start in the front row tomorrow. Button was next ahead of Alonso with DiResta in 6th in front of Webber to confirm Force India’s great form in practice. Only the Lotus of Grosjean made the cut and both Mercedes sat out Q3 to save tyres and keep their options open to choose the best compound at the start of the race.

We had most of our selections destroyed by Maldonado with a total of only 8 colleagues scoring points, with Maria, Champ Ian and Ricky collecting 2 points (1-3) and singles for Carlos, Fernando, Fredrik, Curro and Lou. Our 2012 record is so pathetically bad that even our best performers (Rocco -12,  Joe, Fernando & Ian-11) have averages below 1 point per QF session!  Save the comments...

The grid for tomorrow:

HAM  MAL  VET  BUT  ALO  DIR  WEB  GRO  SCH  ROS

This is the most difficult GP the teams are facing this season. Driver fatigue, mechanical stress and strategy make this a race of attrition that only the strongest will survive. For the drivers this is more like a Marathon than a ‘normal’ race: it’s hot and humid, the bumps and bouncing over the kerbs torture them constantly in the longest race in the calendar (close to the 2 hour limit), ...

Singapore GP 2012 - QF

by Cato Batista, 21/09/2012 20:08:57

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Red Bull finds in its element in the slow circuits. Vettel went trading fastest laps in P1 with Hamilton to top the first session, both a second faster than Button and Alonso.  Fifth was Maldonado (you never know where he is going to turn up) ahead of Webber and Rosberg; both Force India were top 10 same as PER despite complaining his Sauber was very unstable. The track was so green after the morning showers that the teams sent their drivers in intermediate tyres for the installation laps. In the extreme slippery conditions Alosno was fastest with the grooved tyres until it was dry enough for the slicks. No one tried the option tyres in P1.Pirelli has brought the soft & super-soft combination, same as they did in Monaco & Montreal.

P2 developed a similar pattern with Vettel & Hamilton lapping the fastest on soft compound ahead of Alonso & Button In the last half hour the super-softs came out and with a cleaner surface the lap times improved by almost 2 seconds settling the final positions. The most revealing data coming out of the session was the speed and consistency of Alonso’s Ferrari under fuel load in the long run simulations, ahead of Hamilton and Raikkonen. The other was Red Bull’s qualifying pace, with Vettel 3 tenths faster than Button and quicker than most rivals even when he was on  the yellow-prime tyres.  Force India confirmed their best-third team form with the 6th & 7th spots, well ahead of the Mercedes cars and their new exhaust and the Saubers, ...

Singapore GP 2012- Preview

by Cato Batista, 20/09/2012 21:07:51

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Seven races left in the Championship. The countdown moves to Singapore this weekend, the only GP to take place at night in the history of Formula 1. And if the narrow, mostly 90-degree 23 corners of the street layout is the most unnatural place for F1 cars, the weather forecast calls for isolated showers typical of the region for every one of the next few days. No wonder the Safety Car has intervened in each one of the four editions at the Marina Bay Circuit.

McLaren is clearly the car to have right now; they won the last 3 from pole in very different type of circuits and Hamilton has become the most serious challenger to Alonso for the championship. But if the Silver cars are pre-race favorites we can’t discount Ferrari as potential race winners, the Italians had developed their disappointing F2012 into a front runner in the last races. The other question is Red Bull: they dominated on the other street circuits of the season in Monaco and Valencia, and of course we have to keep an eye on Lotus, the underachievers of the season, they say the kind of tracks left on the calendar are ideal for their E20. We shall see.

I have a nice surprise for you. Let’s be honest here: isn’t it true that every race you wonder what could had happened if this or that driver was third instead of fourth, for example? Don’t you always think “would I had won if not Perez had not passed Alosno for second?” or if Button had not retired?  That’s the question that always lingers in our minds at ...

Italian GP - 2012 - Results - Tim's revenge

by Cato Batista, 10/09/2012 3:39:11

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Three poles and three consecutive victories by McLaren. Hamilton dominated; Alonso made good Ferrari’s speed to reach the podium establishing his lead in the Championship thanks to Button and both Red Bull retirements, but the star of the day was Perez overtaking everyone except the leader to take second for his third podium of the year.

With 10 points Tim was our GP winner, his maiden victory this year (he tied for first once already). He hit a triple 3-pointer (1st, 3rd & 5th) to beat by 2 points a group of six double-gold scorers: Maria, Champ Ian, Curro, Santiago and leaders Rocco & Uwe. Tim is our 10th different GP victor this season, with Manbos, Fredrik and Uwe as double winners so far.

Our not-so-terribly-bad results were helped by Hamilton's predicted victory by 15 members. None of us imagined Perez fantastic charge to second so that column went blank (only Sebastian placed him 6th for a single point), but 6 of you somehow knew Alosno was going to overcome his dire grid position to take third. Three more scored 3-pointers with Kimi in fifth, two with Schummi in 6th and only one (Santiago) guessed Massa’s 4th place.

Rocco keeps the lead in the standings with Uwe a little bit closer (92-90); Santiago jumped to third to tie Joe at 84 points leaving Manbos and Fredrik one point behind. The rest of the top ...
