German GP 2011 - Race

by Cato Batista, 23/07/2011 20:45:31

Ladies and Gentlemen:
The 2 surprises were to find Vettel off the front for the first time this year and Hamilton's flying last lap to split the Red Bulls. Ferraris will start 4th & 5th a of Rosberg and Button.
Our QF results were dreadful thanks to Mr Hamilton. None of us consider him in the top 3 and the best we could do was 2 points for Rocco and Fredrik. It was so bad 10 members scored zero!
With less than 20 hours to the start of the race I’ve examined all the weather forecasts for the Nurburgring region and they all show different scenarios, but most coincide that the track will be wet for race time with the highest temperature around 13c deg., definitely cold for the prime tire to operate properly – in the unlikely case they have to use it.
If this micro-climate presents us the remote chance of a dry race, this would be a 2 stopper: the two opening stints with softs and one last closing stint with hards with the minimum number of laps possible. This is because de options are 1.5 seconds faster and most drivers can make them last for up to 30 laps in this low-degradation track. The distance is 60 laps, and according to Pirelli this race could easily be done in one stop, except that most teams are struggling to get the primes to work in these cold temperatures. But stop doing more math, this GP will be decided in the expected treacherous surface conditions and ...surviving the notorious corner 1 after the start!

German GP 2011 Preview

by Cato Batista, 21/07/2011 19:49:24

Ladies and Gentlemen:
We have back to back GPs for the 10th and 11th rounds of the 2011 season. The German GP at the Nurburgring this weekend followed by the Hungarian GP in Budapest on July 29-31. The next race after that will be the Belgium GP (28-28 Aug) 4 weeks later for the F1 summer break.
Even though it looks like the Championship has been already decided half through the season we are still enjoying one of the most entertaining years in F1. Look at this numbers: in 17 races in 2009 we had 244 overtakes; 547 in 2010 in 17 races, and now we’re up to 623 in only 9 races!. To put it into perspective we’d have to discount the 175 passes done to the 3 and still very slow new teams (Lotus, Hispania & Virgin) and 43 between teammates. That leaves 180 overtakes produced by the DRS and 225 (!) under real racing conditions. Of course this is the result of the time differentials produced by the Pirellis, and all the good for it. The races with the highest number of passes are Canada-136, Turkey-123, China-93, and the lowest Monaco with 22.
The question now is if all this wheel-to-wheel racing can be translated into different race winners, and it seems that this is possible now that Ferrari has their wind-tunnel program back on track...and if McLaren comes out of their slump. And of course if the ‘other’ faster car on the grid, driven by Mr Webber starts to show its full potential. Webber is the only of the top drivers yet to lead a lap this year, even though he’s been on pole twice.
The next thing to watch this race will be performance of the all-German Mercedes team on ...

British GP 2011 - Results

by Cato Batista, 11/07/2011 20:46:43

Ladies and Gentlemen:
All Ferrari needed was a blink from Red Bull to snatch their first victory of the season. Alonso had the fastest car out there today, but it seems a bit early for team orders as Red Bull told Webber not to attack Vettel. The extreme difficult conditions at the beginning of the race once more brought out the best driving skills from all the drivers and the battles for position on the closing laps were the top show of the day.
Our predictions were all over the place, same as our results. In the middle of this confusion Maria struck gold with four 3-point positions (2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th) and 14 big points to climb several places on the championship, her first GP victory of 2011, our 8th different winner in 9 races. Tim came second with 11 points and 3 golds (3rd-4th-5th) to continue his surprising assault on the charts; Ricky scored a notable 1st-2nd-3rd to end up next with 9, same points as Alberto, Ian & Lou, these last 3 with two 3-pointers each. With most scores around 7 points (seven colleagues) or even lower (I’m talking several 4 and 5 points) our average was only 7.2, but the most affected were those on top of the table.
For the first time this year we were all not predicting another VET victory (he still had 11 of 21 votes), WEB had a lot support (8) but only 3 hit the target with ALO’s first (Lou, Ricky & Rodrigo), and to proof our expertise 8 of you forecasted VET in second. We actually scored in every position, the best were 6 votes for WEB in 3rd and MAS in 5th. We had a total of 28 correct driver-positions (only 22% accuracy).

British GP 2011 - Race

by Cato Batista, 11/07/2011 20:41:37

Ladies and Gentlemen:
Another Red Bull front row, but this time it was Webber a of Vettel. It was a crazy Q3 session with constantly changing conditions, and it was even crazier in Q2 when showers wetted only parts of the track, a complete lottery. In the end the Status Quo prevailed at the front with Ferrari taking the second row to confirm their upward form. McLaren is lost for words to explain the huge 1.5 seconds margin that separated their best runner Button in 5th to the pole; all Hamilton could do was 10th. And there were more surprises in the top ten: Renault didn’t make the cut, neither Schumacher, instead rookies DiResta is 6th, Maldonado 7th, and Kobayashi’s Sauber is a of Rosberg’s Mercedes. A very interesting looking grid. It’s expected to be partly cloudy and dry with temperatures around 17c (low for the hard compound).
Our QF results were a total disaster. Fourteen members (that’s 14!) didn’t score any points, we had only one 4-point plenum (me), two more -Joe, (leading the QF department) and Fredrik- with 2 points, and 2 more with one point! -Rocco & Erik-. Curro scored a perfect 1-2-3 as well, but it was disallowed for submitting late (what a shame). No big changes atop of the standings as all the leaders went blank (!)
The grid for tomorrow:
WEB VET ALO MAS BUT DIR MAL KOB ROS HAM
DRS detection zone has been set for corner 3, with activation allowed in the short straight to corner 4 and the longer straight after that. DRS wasn’t a factor last GP in Valencia, but this is a very fast circuit where it could make an impact on the 52 lap race. The main ...
