This is it, the final showdown between Lewis and Nico for the title in Abu Double. Even without the double points the championship would had gone to the last race, but as it stands the numbers are helping Nico and working against Lewis.

Ladies and Gentlemen,


After taking every session Nico now has his 10th pole of the season. Lewis closed the gap when it matters the most (Q3) but it took only a couple of minor lockups to concede by 33 hundredths of a second. In the Williams intra-team rivality (2 tenths behind Mercedes), MAS beat BOT by 58 hundredths to settle the second row. McLaren was able to revert their bad Friday with a completely different set up to get their cars in the top 10 with BUT 5th - albeit a long 7 tenths behind Williams and almost a second behind Mercedes. Big gaps considering this is a very short circuit (70-seconds laps). For once VET was faster than RIC splitting the McLarens in 6th. ALO attacking the corners with “scandinavian flicks” in pure rally style was 8th followed by MAG, RIC and RAI. Ladies and Gentlemen,


The Mercs are comfortably ahead of the field, about 1 sec in P1 and half a sec in P2, with Nico in front of Lewis by 2 tenths. After the first day of action this looks like a repeat of Austin where the 2 Williams and RIC were the best of the rest, except that RAI somehow found a quick lap in P2 to sneak to third after he was all over the place for most of both sessions. Lap times from P1 are mostly irrelevant as the teams had to change their programs to cope with severe lack of grip presented by the brand new asphalt. Pirelli had program to bring the Hard/Medium combo but protests (particularly from a very vocal MAS) made them to change instead to Med/Soft that are now showing blistering problems in the surface’s very high ...
